Otis ‘Jack' Mitchell , 80
Otis "Jack" Mitchell, 80, of Broadway, died March 10, 2010, at the home of his son, David.
Mr. Mitchell was born on March 26, 1929, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Perry and Virgie Cubbage Mitchell.
He worked as a shovel operator for David A. Reed and Son until his retirement. He was a member of the Melrose Church of the Brethren.
On April 15, 1950, he married the former Alice Elizabeth Shipp, who preceded him in death on July 30, 1962.
Surviving are two daughters, Alice M. Gibson and Mary E. Deavers, both of Harrisonburg; five sons, Donald Wayne Mitchell, John Mitchell, Owen Lee Mitchell, all of Harrisonburg, Otis David Mitchell, of Broadway and Gary Nelson Mitchell, of Woodstock; two sisters, Roxie Nesselrodt, of Harrisonburg, and Bernice Hottinger, of Broadway; four brothers, Leon Mitchell, of Harrisonburg, Theodore Mitchell, of Bridgewater, Clyde Mitchell, of Broadway and John Mitchell, of North Carolina; and 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Pastor Guy Hudson and Erich Bennett will conduct a funeral service Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Melrose Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg.

Eugene E. Stewart, 79
Eugene Edward (Mr. Gene) Stewart, 79, of Timberville, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at his home.
He was born Sept. 28, 1930, at Winding Gulf, W.Va., and was a son of the late Sparks and Ethel Richards Stewart.
Gene retired from the United States Air Force, where he was a staff sergeant and cryptologist. He was a faithful member of Wood's Chapel Independent Bible Church, north of New Market, where he served for many years as a deacon. He had previously resided in Bridgewater for many years.
He was married twice. His first wife, Vivian Stewart, died in 1986. His second wife, Susan Stewart, survives.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Dawn Marie Woodrum and husband, John, of Mount Sidney; two stepchildren, Thomas Cassidy and wife, Susan, of Poway, Calif., and Ruth Cassidy Jones and husband, Nicholas, of Verona; a granddaughter, Hannah Rhea Woodrum; five stepgrandchildren, Sara and Maxwell Jones and Dylan, Aaron and Emma Cassidy; and a close friend, Danny McBride, of New Market.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, who raised him, Mrs. Lucy Richards, and two brothers, Charles and Larry Stewart.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wood's Chapel Independent Bible Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the church with the pastor, Glen Turner, officiating and assisted by the Rev. Sam Frye and Pastor Donald Bradley.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund or the Missionaries Fund of Wood's Chapel Church, P.O. Box 148, New Market, VA 22844.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Theis Funeral Home in New Market, where friends may sign the register book at anytime.

Betty A. Eberly, 57
Betty Ann Eberly, 57, a resident of 1307 Muddy Creek Road, Harrisonburg, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at her home. She had been in failing health.
Mrs. Eberly was born on March 23, 1952, in Dayton, and was a daughter of the late John V. and Alice Rohrer Heatwole.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant View Old Order Mennonite Church.
On Oct. 4, 1972, she married Willis R. Eberly, who survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Joyce Horst and husband, Galen, Lydia Good and husband, Ross, all of Dayton, Annette Horst and husband, Steven, Dorthy Good and husband, Aaron, all of Harrisonburg; one son, Norlyn Eberly and wife, Barbara, of Harrisonburg; four sisters, Wanda Shank and husband, Harold, of Bridgewater, Susan Wenger and husband, Alvin, of Mount Crawford, Ruth Rhodes and husband, Nolan, of Harrisonburg; Doris Rohrer and husband, Eldon, of Dayton; two brothers, Kenneth Heatwole and wife, Mary, of Harrisonburg, Ray Lynn Heatwole and wife, Lucille, of Dayton; nine granddaughters and nine grandsons.
Bishop Marion Wenger and ministers of the church will conduct a funeral service on Friday, March 12, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Pleasant View Old Order Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Her body has been taken to her home, where friends may call until 7:30 Thursday evening.
McMullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred F. Rodgers, 86
Mildred Frances Rodgers, 86, of Elkton, passed away March 9, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Rodgers was born March 19, 1923, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Annie McMullen Dean.
She was a member of the Mount Olivet Christian Church near Elkton and had previously worked at Metro Pants and the Sunnyside Retirement Community. She loved to sing in the choir, cook, garden and fish. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
On Nov. 24, 1941, she married her husband of 68 years, Eutaw James Rodgers, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, James McArthur Rodgers and wife, Annette, of Smithfield, Douglas Eutaw Rodgers and wife, Loraine, of Maryland, Chauncey Eugene "Chick" Rodgers and wife, Sharon, of Harrisonburg; a brother, Herbert Dean, of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Tony Rodgers and Addenna Cox; three great-grandchildren, Laurin Rodgers, Erica Cox and Julia Cox. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Avis, Leonard, Cecil and George "Ben" Dean, and a sister, Dorothy Lam.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 12, 2010, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the Rodgers home at anytime.

Petr I. Metlenko, 82
Petr Ivanovich Metlenko, 82, of McGaheysville, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at his residence. Petr had lived in the Ukraine prior to moving here Oct. 28, 1993.
Petr was born in Mihaylovka, Ukraine, on Jan. 31, 1928, and was a son of the late Ivan and Fiakla (Gneush) Metlenko. He was a member of First Russian Baptist Church.
He was united in marriage on Jan. 22, 1949, to Lyubov Gregoryevna Zovgorodnyaya Metlenko, who preceded him in death on Oct. 11, 2006.
Petr is survived by a daughter, Galina Vakarchuk and husband, Ivan, of McGaheysville; five sons, Alexander Metlenko, of Sacramento, Calif., Yuriy Metlenko, of Mount Solon, Pavel Metlenko, of Ukraine, Leoned Metlenko, of Sacramento, Calif., and Vladimer Metlenko, of Weyers Cave. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel, Bridgewater, with the Rev. Petr Tkachuk officiating. Burial will follow at Clover Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 11, 2010, at 7 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

Survivors include three sons, Ralph L. Mowry Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of Shenandoah, Randolph L. Mowry, of New York, N.Y., and William B. Mowry and his wife, LaDonna, of Lyndhurst.
A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Central United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Thornrose Cemetery.

Paul E. Greco, 82
STAUNTON, Va. - Paul Everette Greco, 82, widower of Audrey Lee (Smith) Greco, of 1528 Middlebrook Road, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, in King's Daughters' Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Winding Gulf, W.Va., a son of the late Sam R. and Lelia E. (Thomas) Greco.
Mr. Greco was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a meat cutter by Kroger. He attended Grace Bible Church.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul E. Greco Jr.; two brothers, Raymond and Irvin Greco; and a sister, Ruby Phillips.
Family members include a brother, Vernon Sam Greco, of West Virginia, and a close friend, Earl T. Desper Jr.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010, in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Roy Lee Trump. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.

Dicie L. Hutchinson, 83
Dicie Lorene (Michael) Hutchinson, 83, of Bridgewater, Va., died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Bridgewater Home.
She was born in Parnassas, Va., on May 8, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Whitney Allen and Carrie Ethel (Crum) Michael.
Dicie graduated from Huntington College in Huntington, Ind. She was the teacher of the Ruth Stinebaugh Kindergarten for 17 years and served as a substitute teacher for Rockingham County Public Schools.
She was an active member of Bridgewater Church of the Brethren. She was past president of the Bridgewater Home Auxiliary and was a member of the Junior Women's Club of Bridgewater.
On June 19, 1949, she was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Duane Hutchinson, who preceded her in death July 29, 2005.
She is survived by one son, Philip Duane Hutchinson and wife, Sue, of Bridgewater; a daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Powell, of Bridgewater; five sisters, Mardee Kiser, Drehla Sours, Wona Faye Puffenbarger, Lois Lam and Flossie Andrews; one brother, A. Ray Michael; five grandchildren, Corey D. Hutchinson, Erin H. Dalrymple, Kent M. Hutchinson, Ross A. Powell, Hannah P. Polk; and one great-grandson, Ryan P. Hutchinson.
Mrs. Hutchinson was preceded in death by three brothers W. Kay Michael, W.L. Michael and A. Hinkle Michael.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren Friday, March 12, 2010, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jeff Carr and the Rev. Dr. Robert R. Miller officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Bridgewater with family and friends meeting at the Johnson Funeral Home at 10:45 a.m. to go in procession.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.
