The American Association of University Women is one of the oldest nonprofit organizations dedicated to women’s rights. This year we proudly celebrate our 125th anniversary.
On Nov. 28, 1881, AAUW was founded by Marion Talbot, Ellen Richards, and 15 other women college graduates, and began its quest in the fight for equity. AAUW has a rich tradition of leadership, scholarship, advocacy and action.
Today, we number more than 100,000 members; 1,300 branches; and 500 college and university partners nationwide.
AAUW has shaped the social, political and economic scene for women, including the fight for pay equity; a woman’s right to vote; and legislation that protects women at home, in schools, and in the workplace.
For years, AAUW has been a source for research about women and higher education, sexual harassment, and workplace equity.
The AAUW Harrisonburg Branch is 76 years old. Each year we honor the top female graduate at each of our four high schools with a cash award, a certificate of recognition and a book donated to the school library in her honor. We also award $500 to a Blue Ridge Community College student who is pursuing further studies.
AAUW Harrisonburg has monthly programs, September through May, that are free and open to the public. Please join us, and also join us in celebrating AAUW’s 125th anniversary and accomplishments by and for women.
