Mules Prance, Dance ... And Even Pray On Sunday By Suzanne Sukhram
STRASBURG - From the driveway, there is unusual or extraordinary about the Fosters’ unassuming home in the country. The owners – a country boy from Rappahannock County and a city girl from Baltimore – look to be deep in love after 14 years of being together.
Even as you come onto the porch, the only thing that may be slightly unusual – depending on where you live – is the sight of two birds’ nests that are close enough to see the mother birds feeding their babies. It’s cool outside, a beautiful spring day, and the cheeps of the birds are delightful to hear.
As we enter the house, Steve Foster takes us into the trophy room where there are hundreds of trophies along three walls. Two Governors Cups and a 2004 World Championship trophy are the treasures in the room. Before he gets his picture taken, Steve leaves to put on his cowboy shirt and hat, then comes back grinning.
He shares a video of some high jumps of Missy, his 15 year old mule, who he’s had for five years and who never fails to bring a trophy – or many – home from every competition she’s entered.
Then, it’s time to meet Missy and her younger sister, Grace. While Missy is the high jumper in the family, Grace is the one who does the fancy tricks. Foster brings Grace over from her paddock to Missy’s so he can show both mules off.
